“There can be no peace among men and nations, so long as the strong continue to oppress the weak, so long as injustice is done to other peoples, just so long will we have cause for war, and make a lasting peace an impossibility.”

- Rt. Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey

WELCOME

The first Black August event was held at the Revolutionary Memorial Service of Black Panther leader, George Jackson, who was murdered at San Quentin on August 21, 1971. From both a historical and modern day view of the African American experience, August reigns supreme in its rebellious significance. Maybe it’s the heat. But in August of 1619, the first group of enslaved Africans landed at Jamestown, Virginia. The birthday of the Honorable Marcus Garvey, founder of the UNIA is August 15. And Nat Turner’s historic slave rebellion rocked Southampton County, Virginia on August 22, 1831. And on Aug. 8, 1978 – after a 15-month armed police standoff with the Philadelphia-based naturalist MOVE Organization, the police raided MOVE, killing one of their own in police crossfire, and charging nine MOVE people with murder.

As we move into the last month of summer 2009, we find the temperature scorching in America. Harvard’s Skip Gates get’s the business from Boston police; President Obama finds out the “the honeymoon is truly over” as “town hall meetings” turn violent; and a recent report by the EPI says Blacks will likely lead in percentage increase in poverty from the recession. Whew..looks like the fight for change is just getting started. Welcome to the Black August 2009 Issue of The Bond Report.

For the past four years, we have stated – there is a critical need for Black people to organize, energize, and mobilize in order to insure our survival. We never believed that the need for critical commentary and action was heading for a holiday. Any student of history will tell you that “power concedes nothing without a demand.” With the abundance of data and the lack of insight – we realize there is a great need for the empowering content you’ll find in this award winning e-newsletter.

Finally, let’s get it together and pursue our greatness with passion. I have been putting more tools in place for us to get connected. Social networking, events, collaborations, traditional radio, streaming radio, blogs, e-mail and speaking engagements are a few methods available today. Let me know what you think of our new look and also our updated website. You can catch us on the social networking platforms, events, or our  website in-between issues. Thank you for allowing us to share a snapshot of content with you. I hope it helps as another tool to continually raise your African consciousness.

JAY-Z ON HIS IPOD

by Halifu Osumare (www.halifuosumare.com)

There is little doubt that President Barack Obama has brought a new style---a new panache, if you will---to the White House and the US Presidency. But what are the sources of this new style and approach in his handling of everything from international relations to his cabinet choices, and from his cool demeanor dealing with one of the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression to taking Michele out on a date night in a trendy DC restaurant?....

 WHO ARE THE MOVE 9?

MOVE Family 1978

As the basement filled with nearly six feet of water we had to hold our babies and animals above the rising water so they wouldn't drown. Suddenly shots rang out (news reporters and others know the shots came from a house at 33rd and Baring St., not our home, because they actually saw the man shooting) and bullets immediately filled the air as police throughout the area opened fire on us.

Officer James Ramp, who was standing above us on street-level and facing our home, was killed by a single bullet that struck him on a downward angle. This alone makes it impossible for MOVE to have killed Ramp, since we were below street level, in the basement. MOVE adults came out of the house carrying our children through clouds of tear gas, we were beat and arrested.
